Location and Getting Around

Neil Niwas is located on a peaceful canal in the Thonburi district that connects to the Chao Phraya River. This area offers a more authentic Bangkok experience with its traditional vibe, peaceful canals, and floating markets. It’s a 10-minute walk to the iconic Wat Arun temple.

The location is wonderfully convenient. You can easily reach Bangkok’s Old Town by ferry, enjoy a short tuk-tuk ride across the river, or use the MRT from nearby Itsaraphap station. Instead of being stuck in the busy tourist areas, you get the best of both worlds – a peaceful neighborhood to return to with quick access to all the main attractions.

For getting around Bangkok’s attractions, we recommend Tuk Tuk Hop – an on-demand electric tuk-tuk service offering unlimited rides for the day. We used it twice during our recent visits to Thailand’s capital and found it extremely convenient.

The Property & Rooms

Housed in an absolutely stunning colonial Thai house dating back to the 1890s, Neil Niwas operates as an intimate boutique homestay with just four uniquely designed rooms. During its careful restoration, the house retained as much of its original structure as possible. Original staircases remain intact, and traditional Thai architectural elements like raised floors, steep roofs, and intricate wooden detailing have been preserved.

The property features a stunning terrace where you can relax and watch life unfold on the small canal. The meticulously maintained garden provides shade and tranquility.

The four rooms each have their own character and an animal Thai name:

  • Kwang (Deer) – The largest room at 46.5 square meters (500 sq ft), perfect for couples or families up to 4 people. Decorated in western style with views of the historic garden and Bangkok Yai canal beyond.
  • Hook (Owl) – A more compact room with garden views, accessible by either the main or a private staircase, giving you a feeling of privilege. Decorated in warm colors with handmade furniture and art pieces that add unique character.
  • Mu (Pig) – In Chinese culture, the pig symbolizes fertility and wealth, which inspired this room’s red tones and oriental antique art. This airy room features natural light and views of the inner courtyard, garden, and city. Mu connects to Kob, so booking both gives you the entire upper floor.
  • Kob (Frog) – The same size as Hook, this room focuses on simplicity and airiness with white tones and varied woodwork styles. The bed can be arranged as two singles or a king, making it flexible for different travelers.

All rooms come equipped with air conditioning, private bathrooms with complimentary toiletries, and comfortable bathrobes. Tea and coffee makers allow you to enjoy a morning cup while taking in canal and garden views. The rooms blend traditional Thai design with modern comfort, featuring wooden floors, high ceilings, and carefully chosen furnishings.

Breakfast By The River

Breakfast at Neil Niwas really exceeded our expectations. Not only was it delicious, but it was beautifully presented and served on the patio overlooking the canal. You can choose from authentic Thai breakfast, continental, full English, or vegetarian options.

Watching the city wake up while longtail boats pass by became the perfect start to our days in Bangkok. Local specialties, warm dishes, and fresh tropical fruits are prepared with care and served in this magical setting.

Activities & Experiences

Canal life provides constant entertainment from the terrace. Watch longtail boats pass by carrying locals and tourists, and enjoy the peaceful rhythm of this traditional Bangkok neighborhood.

Our host Veena shared excellent recommendations on local experiences and restaurants. All her suggestions were amazing and helped us discover authentic spots we would have never found on our own. She can also arrange for a private longtail boat to explore the Thonburi canals, which is a fantastic way to see this historic area.
