Itinerary Overview
Best Time To Visit
When planning your Kenya safari, timing makes all the difference. The dry seasons (January-February and June-October) offer excellent wildlife viewing, when animals gather around limited water sources, and the sparse vegetation makes them easier to spot. Between July and October, you can witness the spectacular river crossings of the Great Migration in the Masai Mara.
For bird enthusiasts, the period from October to March is particularly rewarding, as migratory birds arrive throughout Kenya’s parks and lakes.
Many travelers prefer to avoid the heavy rain months (April-May), as some camps close and roads become challenging. November’s short rains bring fewer visitors but reward those who come with lower prices, lush landscapes, and newborn wildlife.
For beach destinations like Diani, January-February and July-September offer sunny days with less humidity. December holidays bring perfect weather but expect higher prices and more visitors.

Kenya’s bustling capital is more than just a gateway to safari destinations. Nairobi offers a blend of urban energy, cultural attractions, and wildlife encounters that make it worth exploring for a couple of days.

Located in Kenya’s northern region, Samburu National Reserve offers a distinctly different safari experience from the country’s more famous parks. Its arid landscape, dominated by the Ewaso Ng’iro River, is home to unique wildlife species you won’t find anywhere else in Kenya, including the Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx – collectively known as the “Samburu Special Five.” This area is also the ancestral home of the Samburu people, whose semi-nomadic lifestyle and vibrant traditions add a rich cultural dimension to your African experience. This off-the-beaten-path destination rewards visitors with stunning scenery, excellent big cat sightings, and a true wilderness feel.
Getting there: A one-hour Air Kenya flight from Nairobi Wilson Airport to Samburu is the fastest option.
Where to stay:

Masai Mara
Masai Mara National Reserve is Kenya’s crown jewel, renowned worldwide for its exceptional wildlife concentration and the spectacular Great Migration. Between July and October, over a million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle cross the Mara River in search of fresh grazing.
Bordering the national reserve, Mara North and Lemek Conservancies offer an exclusive Kenya safari experience. They are managed in partnership with local Maasai communities, combining conservation with cultural preservation. Here, you’ll enjoy off-road driving, night game drives, and walking safaris – activities not permitted within the main reserve.
Getting there: A 1.5-hour bush plane flight connects Samburu and Masai Mara, offering spectacular aerial views of Kenya’s diverse landscapes.
Where to stay:

- Saruni Wild ($$$) – Exclusive tented camp set in an untouched game-rich area of the Lemek Conservancy, offering a luxury safari experience under canvas.
For the most rewarding Mara experience, consider splitting your stay between these two distinctive Saruni properties. This allows you to enjoy both the refined comfort of Saruni Mara and the raw wilderness connection of Saruni Wild.

Day 1: Nairobi Arrival
On Day 1, you’ll likely fly into Nairobi, Kenya’s capital city. When booking your flights, aim for a morning or early afternoon arrival to make the most of your first day. The transfer to Giraffe Manor is already included in your room rate, so you won’t need to worry about arranging transportation after your long journey.
Save now, enjoy later
Too busy right now? Save this gem to Pinterest for later.
You’ll instantly feel transported to another era as you arrive at the historic 1930s manor house. The elegant property sits within a sanctuary for endangered Rothschild giraffes, who visit the hotel at specific times of day.
Take some time to settle into your room and recover from the flight. If you’re feeling energetic, consider a short stroll to the adjacent Giraffe Center, where you can learn more about conservation efforts. But make sure you’re back at the manor for afternoon tea – your first opportunity to meet the resident giraffes as they stop by for treats. It’s the perfect and magical start to your Kenyan adventure.
Day 2: Nairobi
Wake up early for what will surely be one of the most memorable breakfasts of your life – sharing your morning meal with curious Rothschild giraffes. Nothing quite compares to enjoying morning coffee while these magnificent creatures gently take treats from your hand.
After breakfast, head to the Sheldrick Elephant Nursery to watch the orphaned baby elephants during their morning feeding and playtime. It’s both heartwarming and educational to see the incredible work being done to rehabilitate these young elephants.
The nursery is located within Nairobi National Park, so pack some snacks, as you’ll want to venture directly into the park afterward. You’ll be surprised at just how much wildlife there is to see, despite its proximity to the city center.
If you’re looking for a change of scenery, consider visiting the African Heritage House – a stunning architectural gem showcasing the continent’s artistic treasures.
Day 3: Nairobi To Samburu
After breakfast, you’ll head to Wilson Airport for a short one-hour flight to Samburu on a small bush plane. This scenic flight offers your first glimpse of Kenya’s changing landscapes as you head north toward the more arid regions.
Upon arrival at Saruni Samburu, you’ll immediately notice how the lodge is built to maximize those incredible views. We found ourselves constantly pausing to take in the vast landscape stretching before us – it’s the kind of place where every meal, shower, and even bed comes with a view. Give yourself a moment to unwind, perhaps cooling off in the infinity pool, before your afternoon activity.
In the afternoon, visit a traditional Samburu village to learn about local culture and traditions directly from community members. The Samburu people sometimes referred to as ‘The Butterfly People’ due to their vibrant clothes adorned with colorful beads and intricate patterns. If you’re fortunate, your visit might coincide with a local celebration such as a Samburu wedding – a joyful event filled with traditional dancing and singing.
Day 4-5: Samburu
Today begins your exploration of Samburu National Reserve, where you’ll spend the next two days on safari drives. The wildlife viewing here is outstanding. If luck is on your side, you’ll encounter all of Kenya’s big cats along with the Samburu Special Five.
From our own experience: We were amazed at how consistently we spotted lions and leopards on every single drive in Samburu. Our most heart-stopping moment came when we encountered a lioness delicately carrying her tiny, still-blind cub in her mouth. She passed so close to our open vehicle that we could have touched her if we dared. The proximity was thrilling and slightly terrifying – a reminder of the raw wildness just an arm’s length away.
Few experiences compare to having a bush breakfast alongside the Ewaso Ng’iro River. Savoring Scotch eggs, pancakes and hot coffee while watching herds of elephants, zebras, and other wildlife come down to drink creates an unforgettable memory. For us, these peaceful mornings quickly became the highlight of each day. There’s simply no better dining room than under an acacia tree with wildlife as your companions.
If you’re traveling with kids, the Warriors Academy provides an excellent chance to engage with local culture. Our children had a blast learning bush skills and playing games with the Samburu guides. It’s fun and gives a break from game drives while immersing in the safari experience.
Day 6: Samburu To Masai Mara
After breakfast, you’ll head to the airstrip for your 1.5-hour bush plane ride to the Masai Mara.
Upon landing, you’ll be transferred to Saruni Mara, an intimate lodge tucked away in a secluded valley within the Mara North Conservancy. The lodge offers a warm, welcoming atmosphere that feels more like staying in a private home than a typical safari camp.
As afternoon arrives, head out for your first game drive in the Mara North Conservancy – these grasslands are literally teeming with animals. With fewer vehicles than in the main reserve and the ability to go off-road, your first evening drive often delivers exceptional sightings right from the start.
Day 7: Masai Mara
The pre-dawn wake-up call might feel brutal, but trust us – it’s absolutely worth it. Departing in darkness, you’ll make your way to the hot air balloon launch site. Once airborne, you’ll see the Masai Mara in a completely different way. From this unique vantage point, you might spot elephant herds, giraffes, or even predators returning from their night hunts.
Afterwards, a champagne breakfast awaits – white tablecloths, proper china, and bubbling mimosas in the middle of the wilderness. We found this surreal contrast to be one of the most memorable meals of our entire trip.
In the hours following your balloon adventure, you’ll return to the familiar rhythm of game drives. Your guide will take you to different areas, perhaps focusing on the famous Mara River. If you’re visiting during migration season, you might witness the dramatic wildebeest crossings that have made this reserve legendary. Even without a crossing, the rich diversity of wildlife throughout the Masai Mara ecosystem ensures every drive brings new discoveries.
Day 8-9: Mara North Conservancy
For the next two days, immerse yourself in excellent safari game viewing throughout Mara North and Lemek Conservancies. These private reserves offer exceptional wildlife sightings without the crowds. From our own experience: we were astounded to encounter 22 lions in a single day – from playful cubs to imposing males with magnificent manes.
On one of these days, you’ll transfer to Saruni Wild, exchanging your cottage for a luxury tent that brings you even closer to nature. Despite canvas walls, you’ll still enjoy comfortable beds and hot showers, but with the added soundtrack of the African wilderness.
Don’t miss the opportunity for a bush lunch near the river’s edge. These riverside meals combine delicious food with unforgettable wildlife viewing.
If your visit falls on a Thursday, consider a trip to the local Maasai market in Aitong village. This colorful gathering brings people from across the region to trade cattle, food, clothing, and supplies. It offers a glimpse into local life – just be sure to arrive before midday to witness the energetic cattle trading.
Another highlight is a guided walk at the Ol Chorro Rhino Sanctuary, where you can approach white rhinos on foot. This visit also teaches you about conservation efforts to protect and increase Kenya’s rhino population.
Day 10: Masai Mara To Diani
Start your day with an early morning game drive when the savannah glows in the gentle dawn light, and predators may still be active.
Enjoy a final bush breakfast in the open grasslands, soaking in the vastness of the Masai Mara one last time. This farewell meal in the wild provides a perfect moment to reflect on your safari adventures before transitioning to the coastal portion of your journey.
After breakfast, you’ll head to the airstrip for your flight to Diani Beach, trading the golden grasslands for the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. The remainder of the day is yours to settle into your beach accommodation.
Day 11-13: Diani Beach
Spend three full days unwinding on the pristine shores of Diani Beach. This is your time to relax after the early mornings and excitement of the safari.
Consider taking a day trip to nearby Msambweni Beach. It’s one of Kenya’s most quiet and unspoiled coastal areas. Beach boys and discos are unknown here, offering a truly peaceful seaside experience.
The rest of your time is yours to enjoy however you please – swimming in the warm ocean, walking along the powder-soft sand, reading a book under swaying palm trees, or simply doing nothing at all as you recharge before returning home.
Day 14: Departure
After two amazing weeks in Kenya, it’s time to say goodbye to this beautiful country. On the last day of your Kenya itinerary, make your way back to Nairobi. As a perfect ending, enjoy a meal at The Talisman restaurant before heading to the airport for your flight home.
