La Caravana hotel located at Playa Carrillo in Costa Rica

If you’re dreaming of a stay that’s off the beaten path – something a little more adventurous than your typical resort – La Caravana might just be the escape you’re looking for. Set on Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula, this laid-back beachfront retreat offers vintage charm, barefoot living, and a deep connection to nature, just steps from the ocean. It’s an ideal choice for travelers seeking a quieter, more personal experience.

Where is La Caravana?

La Caravana is located in the quiet coastal town of Puerto Carrillo, on the Nicoya Peninsula in Guanacaste Province. It’s just a few minutes south of the more vibrant Samara Beach, making it a perfect base for travelers looking for a blend of seclusion and accessibility.

You can reach La Caravana by car from either of Costa Rica’s international airports:

  • Liberia Guanacaste Airport (LIR) – about a 2-hour drive
  • Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) – approximately 4.5-hour drive

We personally arranged a private transfer from La Fortuna, which took around 3.5 hours and was a scenic drive through the mountains and countryside. Renting a car is recommended to explore the surrounding area at your own pace, but shuttles and private transfers can be arranged by the hosts.

The Stay: Inside the Avion

Our stay in the vintage 1968 Avion trailer, one of the unique campers at La Caravana, felt like stepping into a different rhythm of life. Nestled in the peaceful beach town of Puerto Carrillo, just a 2-minute walk from the shore, this cozy retreat quickly became our private sanctuary. No schedule, no shoes – just the sound of the ocean and the rustle of palm trees.

The Avion is surprisingly spacious, with a cozy bedroom, a small work desk, a sofa, and a fully equipped kitchen. The bedroom features a queen-size bed, air conditioning, and a little beauty corner with a mirror.

The kitchen has everything you need: a gas stove, a coffee machine, utensils, a fridge, and plenty of space for prepping meals.

There’s a lovely patio with a large deck that became our favorite place to relax.

On the terrace, you’ll find a bathroom with a hot shower. To rinse off the sand after a beach day, there is also an outdoor shower conveniently located in the garden. In the evening, you can gather around the open fireplace – a perfect way to unwind under the stars.

La Caravana isn’t just one trailer – it’s a small collection of uniquely restored vintage campers. Alongside the Avion, guests can also choose to stay in the Airstream or the Argosy, each offering its own character and charm but sharing the same peaceful vibe and close proximity to the beach.

Daily Life at La Caravana

Mornings began at our own pace. We’d make a hearty breakfast – fried eggs, gallo pinto, sliced avocados – and eat it slowly on the outdoor patio, soaking in the sounds of nature.

During the day, we’d wander down to the nearby Carrillo Beach, often finding it almost completely empty. If we were in the mood for a livelier atmosphere, Samara Beach was just a short drive away, full of restaurants, beach bars, and water sports.

Evenings were our favorite. Sometimes we walked to nearby restaurants – La Puesta del Sol for sunsets, or El Colibri Hotel & Steak House for a proper BBQ with a cozy atmosphere.

Other nights, we picked up fresh veggies, local cheese, fruits, sausages, and a bottle of wine from the grocery store. The outdoor patio, lit by string lights, turned out to be the perfect setting for romantic dinners under the stars. Amazingly, there were no mosquitoes, just a cool evening breeze.

While La Caravana is perfect for slowing down, there are plenty of memorable experiences just a short drive away:

  • Sea Turtle Nesting & Hatching
Depending on the time of year (typically July to December), you may witness sea turtles nesting or hatchlings making their way to the ocean at nearby beaches like Camaronal Wildlife Refuge.
  • Horseback Riding on the Beach
Several local tour operators offer guided horseback rides along Carrillo or Samara beaches, often timed for sunset.
  • Explore the Tidal Pools
At low tide, walk along the rocky sections of the coastline to discover natural tidal pools filled with small sea creatures – great for a peaceful, family-friendly adventure.
